Styles
'Pile' is a term that describes the length of fiber strands as well as the density of those strands. Further, carpeting is made by attaching loops of fiber to a backing, and those loops can be cut at the tips to create a cut pile. All carpet flooring falls into one of three style categories: cut pile, loop pile, or cut and loop pile.
Cut pile
After the fiber strands are cut, they are twisted, or turned, for added durability. Look for the turns per inch number when comparing cut pile brands. Typically, TPI varies from 3.5 to 6.0. In other words, strands that are twisted 5 times in a one-inch length are labeled ‘5.0 TPI.’ Saxony, the most popular cut pile style, has straight and even fibers.
Loop pile
Loop pile, also commonly called Berber, can have level loops or multi-level loops. A popular Berber style features light-colored level loops that are highlighted by flecks of a darker color. Carpeting with multi-level loops usually has two or three different loop heights that create a pattern effect. The most durable type of carpet has a short loop pile.
Fibers
Nylon has been known as the most durable carpet fiber for decades. Triexta, introduced to the marketplace in 2009, is also a very durable fiber.
